As summer arrives and temperatures rise, it’s important to take extra care of elderly loved ones. Hot weather can pose serious health risks, particularly for older people, who are more vulnerable to heat exhaustion and dehydration. At Cassio Home Help, we’re committed to helping our clients stay safe, well, and comfortable all year round; especially during warmer months.
Why the Elderly Are More at Risk in Hot Weather
As we age, our bodies find it harder to regulate temperature. Many older people also have underlying health conditions or take medications that affect how the body copes with heat. This makes it more difficult to recognise the signs of overheating or dehydration, meaning that even moderate heat can be dangerous.
Top Tips to Keep Cool This Summer
Here are some practical ways to help elderly relatives, neighbours, or clients stay cool and well during hot weather:
1. Encourage Hydration
Make sure they drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Water is best, but diluted juice, herbal teas or squash can also help. Avoid too much caffeine or alcohol, as these can dehydrate the body.
2. Keep Curtains Drawn During the Day
Closing blinds or curtains in rooms that get direct sunlight can help keep the house cooler. Opening windows during the cooler parts of the day – early morning and evening – allows fresh air to circulate.
3. Wear Light, Loose Clothing
Light-coloured cotton or linen clothing allows the body to breathe. A wide-brimmed hat is also helpful if going outside.
4. Use a Fan or Cool Damp Cloths
Fans can provide much-needed relief. Alternatively, placing a cool damp cloth on the back of the neck or wrists can help lower body temperature.
5. Plan Around the Heat
Encourage rest during the hottest part of the day (usually between 11am and 3pm). Activities and outings are best scheduled for the morning or later afternoon.
6. Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion
These can include dizziness, tiredness, headaches, and clammy skin. If you notice any of these, encourage your loved one to rest in a cool place and sip water. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
